![]() ![]() ![]() I wondered where imaginary friends might vacation. Back when we still lived in that farmhouse, when we still lived with my sons’ father. My oldest said, “Oh, Bad Guy? He’s been on a loooong vacation.” I thought back to the days when Oaken and Bad Guy were daily visitors and I would sometimes have to push them on the tire swing in front of our old Pennsylvania farmhouse. Last week, I heard my sons discussing where they thought they’d gone, what Oaken and Bad Guy had been up to since they’d last visited. My children are 8 and 10 now, and Oaken and Bad Guy are no longer a consistent presence, but they still appear every so often. Oaken and Bad Guy went with us on car trips, required seats at the dining table, extra scorecards at mini-golf. My youngest’s imaginary friend was named Oaken John my oldest, in classic Psychology 101 textbook territory, named his Bad Guy. When my children were very little, they invented imaginary friends. ![]()
